Course Overview

The Intravenous Contrast Injection Course approaches key concepts around the chemical and physical properties of commonly used intravenous contrast media within imaging, including those used in conjunction with Radiographic, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT) and Interventional Radiology (IR) procedures. Venous identification and catheter /butterfly insertion techniques are a vital part of the practical component of the course. Proper aseptic techniques and complications of insertions are reviewed, as well as the equipment required and procedure to follow for proper insertion of both angiocatheter and butterfly syringe.

Participants will practice drawing up intravenous solutions, monitoring the administration of IV solutions, and injecting into pre-existing lines. Safety aspects relating to needle stick injury to the practitioner is also included. The course has been approved by the ASRT for 2.25 Category "A" Continuing Education (CE) credits.

***PLEASE BE ADVISED: PRIOR TO CERTIFICATION, INDIVIDUALS MUST:
  • Maintain CPR / BLS certification by either the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
  • Request an intravenous contrast injection application from your State Agency prior to the start date.
    Application must be brought to the class. NYS Registered Radiologic Technologists MUST contact the NYS DOH at 518-402- 7580 prior to the training and request an Official NYS Issued IV Contrast Injection application.
